- THE MONFERRATO REGIMENT - The Monferrato Regiment was present at the Siege and Battle of Turin with two Battalions with the total of 1.176 men (while the second unit present within the walls of the town war the Guard Regiment).
Quite interesting - considering the lack of specific information on this point - it's to understand the precise composition of a Piedmontese Battalion at the epoch of the Spanish Succession War.
As far as I know, there is no precise source able to straight determine the numbers and organization of the Piedmontese Battalion; for this purpose I used then the list of the Royal Archives of Turin where it is precisely described the furnishment of a Piedmontese Battalion; moreover it must be kept in mind that Piedmont at the epoch was under the strong influence of its strong neighbur, i.e. France and the King Luis XIV.
So the Piedemontese battalion had a formal strengh of 600 men, whose 50 where Grenadiers; it was organised on 12 companies (at the epoch still considered just as administrative unit, without military importance);
Each company had: 1 Captain 1 Lieutenant 1 Enseign 4 Sergeants 4 Corporals 1 Drummer 35 Privates
This means that a Battalion had: 12 Captains 12 Lieutenants 12 Enseigns 48 Sergeants 48 Corporals 12 Drummers 420 Privates
As far as I know, theretically all Enseigns should bring a colour (so 12 per Battalion!) but on the field, usually the colours where just 2 per Battalion for a total of 4 in a Regiment in the field (1 colonel and 3 ordinances); this last info I got from the number and type of colours that the Regiment heading Sicily were ordered to carry in that island.
It is also true that during the conflict it was possible to reduce the number of companies to 10 or 9, and this - probably - was depending on the lack of officers and NCO's.
Coming back to our Monferrato Battalions at the Siege of Turin, it is possible to think the following composition (for 1:1 ratio)
Command of the Regiment 1 Colonel 1 Lieutenent-colonel 1 Captain 3 Ensigns (without colours) 1 Lieutenant
I Battalion 593 men on 11 companies: 1 Commander 11 captains 11 Liutenants 4 Ensigns 35 Sergeants 33 Caporals 10 Drummers 488 Privates
II Battalion 576 men on 10 companies: 1 Commander 10 captains 11 Liutenants 4 Ensigns 37 Sergeants 32 Caporals 9 Drummers 472 Privates
